Mountain dew is a well-known soda. Over the years, we’ve heard some myths about this particular soda. Myths include that it causes birth defects, kills sperm, and lowers the overall sperm count. There is no proven fact or theory about this.
Even when consumed in excess, mountain dew won’t affect your sperm count. There are other effects of drinking Mountain dew in excess, but be rest assured that reducing sperm count isn’t one of them. Mountain dew doesn’t cause birth defects or infertility, so how is this even connected? Infertility can be caused by various health issues like STIs and certain reproductive conditions, not by a popular soda drink.

These are just obvious myths that should sound unbelievable. There are just so many myths about mountain dew, perhaps because the soda has been standing tall for 80 years and still delivers as it has been. Mountain dew contains 54mg of caffeine in a 12oz can. Yep, you read that right. That is higher than Coca Cola, with 34mg per 12oz. Pepsi has 38 mg of caffeine. Caffeine doesn’t actually have anything to do with all these myths about Mountain dew. This is particularly because an average cup of coffee has 217mg per 12oz, and that’s about 4 times the amount of Mountain dew.
Though there are some minor side effects of drinking coffee, it won’t cause fertility problems or reduce pee-pee size. So the caffeine content in Mountain dew doesn’t have a major effect, and it cannot cause any sort of fertility or reproductive issues. The content contained in Mountain dew yellow dye is actually passed on in urine because it can actually be digested by the body and the remaining toxins are passed in urine.
Effects of Mountain Dew
Instead of worrying if mountain dew makes the genitals smaller or causes fertility issues, we should be more concerned about the direct effect of mountain dew when consumed in excess.
- There are no known side effects for males drinking Mountain Dew. But, if you drink too much Mountain Dew every day for a long period of time, it can cause health issues such as diabetes and heart disease, according to Harvard Medical School. It contains caffeine, but not in very high amounts.
- Mountain dew, just like any other soda, should be consumed moderately. Sodas are made with similar ingredients; too much refined sugar and high-fructose corn syrup cause a fatty buildup that can lead to liver disease. So, technically, drinking Mountain dew or even any other soda more than you should can actually lead to liver damage.
- Coffee can actually have less effect than some sodas; it is just basically made up of caffeine, but sodas have other constituents that will be harmful when consumed in large amounts. Drinking two or more carbonated beverages, diet or regular, each day may increase your risk for chronic kidney disease.
